Vidor is at Interstate 10 and Farm Road 105, six miles east of Beaumont in western Orange County, according to the Texas State Historical Association. The Census Bureau estimates about 9,600 residents (July 2025). Requests from Vidor go to a local garage door company that serves the area; pricing and scheduling come from that company.
What's different about garage doors in Vidor
No TWIA windstorm inspection. This is the biggest difference from Beaumont. TWIA's coverage area is 14 first-tier coastal counties, including Jefferson County, but not Orange County. So the TWIA rules you may hear about from Beaumont neighbors, such as the Form WPI-8 windstorm certificate, don't apply to Vidor homes. That doesn't mean anything goes: your insurance company may have its own requirements, and the city may require a permit. Ask your agent and the city before you replace a door.
Wind still gets here. The Texas Department of Insurance says garage doors are "particularly vulnerable to high winds" because they span a wide opening with relatively light material. When Hurricane Laura passed in 2020, the National Weather Service listed Orange County among the Texas counties where trees, power lines and power poles came down and some homes were damaged. A door with a published wind rating is still worth considering in Vidor, even without a TWIA rule behind it. See wind-rated garage doors for how ratings work.
Harvey flooding. The National Weather Service says Harvey dropped 30 to 50 inches of rain across Orange County and flooded more than 27,742 homes, and it names Vidor among the hardest-hit areas. Garage doors take floodwater at the bottom: the bottom section, the bottom brackets that hold the lift cables under spring tension, the lower track, and the opener's photo eyes, which DASMA says should sit no more than six inches off the floor. If your garage took on water, have those parts checked for rust even if the door still works.
The city's floodplain and permit office. The City of Vidor's Code Enforcement department carries out the building official's duties for homes and businesses, serves as the city's Flood Plain Administrator, and issues permits. The city lists the office at (409) 769-0150 and asks that permit applications be emailed. Call before replacing a door.
A lumber town that grew up fast. TSHA says Vidor began as a sawmill community named for lumberman Charles Shelton Vidor, incorporated in 1960, and grew to 9,738 people by 1970. If your home dates from those decades, expect an older door, an older spring setup and possibly an opener that predates photo-eye sensors.

Common questions
Do TWIA windstorm inspection rules apply in Vidor?
No. Vidor is in Orange County, and TWIA's coverage area is 14 coastal counties that don't include Orange County. Your own insurance company may still have requirements, so ask your agent before replacing a door.
Who issues building permits in Vidor?
The City of Vidor's Code Enforcement department carries out the building official's duties and issues permits. The city lists its office at (409) 769-0150 and asks that permit applications be emailed. Ask whether your garage door job needs one.
Can a Vidor request go to the same company as a Beaumont request?
It may. We send Vidor requests to a local garage door company that serves the area. If it can't take your job, it will tell you. Ask whether there's a trip fee.
