Harvey's record rain fell here. The National Weather Service says the highest storm-total rainfall report from Hurricane Harvey was 60.58 inches, near Nederland. Use the red emergency release only with the door closed.

Plant country air. TSHA says refineries and related petroleum industries have long been the mainstays of Nederland's economy, with an oil terminal, a refinery and a plant built just north, east and south of town in the early 1900s. The American Galvanizers Association calls industrial environments "generally the most aggressive in terms of corrosion," and says humid air with chlorides from nearby water is almost as corrosive.
