Frequently asked questions
What is the average price to repair a garage door?
HomeAdvisor puts most garage door repairs at about $155 to $379, with an average around $265. Thumbtack reports about $235 to $695, with most people paying around $403. Both are national figures checked in October 2026. See the garage door repair cost guide for every part.
What are common garage door problems?
Broken springs, opener and sensor problems, worn or rusted rollers and cables, doors that come off their tracks, and panels damaged by wind or a car. HomeAdvisor calls broken springs one of the most common and most dangerous problems.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle small things like a loose wall button or weatherstripping. Springs and cables are different: DASMA's homeowner safety tips say spring systems should be repaired only by trained professionals and cables replaced only by a trained technician. For spring, cable or off-track problems, use a garage door company.
Is it worth repairing a garage door?
Usually, when one part has failed. HomeAdvisor's averages are about $265 for a repair and about $1,231 for a replacement. Replacement starts to make sense when the bottom has rusted through, several panels are damaged, parts aren't made anymore, or you need a wind-rated door.
How much does it cost to fix a garage door that's fairly new?
First ask the installer or manufacturer about warranty coverage. If you're paying, HomeAdvisor puts dent repair at about $100 to $300, and Homewyse puts a replacement panel at about $440 to $725 nationally.
Can I lift my garage door by hand if the spring is broken?
No. The springs carry most of the door's weight. DASMA's inspection checklist says not to operate the door until a broken spring is replaced. Leave it closed if you can, and don't pull the emergency release on an open door.
Can you replace just one spring?
DASMA's safety tips say that if your door has two springs, replace both, even if one isn't broken. Both springs have the same wear, and replacing both keeps the door balanced.
What should I do with my garage door after a flood?
Don't run it until it's been checked. Floodwater reaches the bottom section, bottom brackets, cable ends, lower track and the opener's safety sensors, which DASMA says sit no more than six inches off the floor. Rust on the bottom brackets matters because they're under spring tension.
Do garage doors have a wind rating?
Yes. TDI says garage doors in Texas must be tested to ASTM E 330, and wind-rated doors come with a published rating and installation drawings. The rating your house needs depends on the door's size and the building. See wind-rated garage doors.
Do I need a TDI windstorm inspection to replace my garage door?
In Jefferson County (Beaumont, Port Arthur, Nederland, Port Neches), possibly; garage doors aren't on TDI's list of repairs that don't need one. Ask your insurance agent or TDI at 800-248-6032 before the door goes in. Vidor is in Orange County, outside the TWIA area, so TWIA's rules don't apply there.
Does homeowners insurance cover a damaged garage door?
Sudden damage from a storm or a car may be covered after the deductible; ask your agent about wear and tear. In Jefferson County, wind coverage may be on a separate TWIA policy. TDI notes that percentage deductibles can be larger than a door repair.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door opener?
Repair is cheaper for sensors, remotes or a single gear. HomeAdvisor puts sensor realignment at about $150 to $250 and a new installed opener at about $218 to $540. If the opener has no photo-eye sensors near the floor, DASMA says it's time for a new one.
Who actually does the work if I use this site?
An independent local garage door company. SETX Garage Door is a referral website; we pass your request to one company that serves the area. That company sets its price, schedule and terms, and you decide whether to hire it.
Do I pay anything to use SETX Garage Door?
No. You never pay us. Companies we refer you to may pay us for referrals. You pay only the company you hire, at the price it gives you.
