Where these numbers come from

  • Sources: HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack and Homewyse national cost guides, plus one time estimate from Raynor Door Company, a Chicago-area garage door installer. Links are in the Sources list below.
  • Checked: October 2026. Where a guide shows its own update date (HomeAdvisor, June 2026; Thumbtack, July 1, 2026), the Sources list gives it.
  • National, not local: none of these are Beaumont prices or prices from the company we refer you to. Homewyse changes its estimate by ZIP code; we used its default figure.
  • Not included: wind-rated or impact-rated doors, windstorm inspection fees and city permit fees. Ask for those separately.

What moves a garage door repair quote in Southeast Texas

Rust. A rusted spring often comes with rusted cables, drums and bottom brackets. One failure can turn into three parts on the bill. Ask the company to price each part separately.

Storm damage. A door bowed by wind can mean bent track, popped rollers and creased panels at once. Several damaged panels usually push the math toward a new door.

Wind-rated replacement parts. In Jefferson County, a replacement door may need a published wind rating and installation to the maker's high-wind instructions. Those doors and that labor can cost more than a basic door. See wind-rated garage doors.

Door size and weight. Double doors need bigger springs and longer cables. HomeAdvisor says double-door springs often cost about $15 to $30 more per spring.

After-hours calls. HomeAdvisor says to budget for emergency fees if the door fails outside regular business hours. If the door is closed and the car is out, a regular appointment may cost less.

Service-call fees and distance. Some companies charge to come out and credit it toward the repair; some don't. Ask before the visit.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?

Repair is cheaper for one failed part. HomeAdvisor's averages: about $265 for a repair vs. about $1,231 for a replacement. Replacement starts to win in these cases:

Situation Usually repair Usually replace
One broken spring or cable ✔
Sensors, remote or wall button ✔
One dented panel, model still made ✔
Several bent or bowed panels after a storm ✔
Bottom section or brackets rusted through ✔
Panels for your model discontinued ✔
You need a wind-rated door anyway ✔
Repairs keep coming back ✔

A rough rule some homeowners use: if a repair quote is more than about half the price of a comparable new door, and the door is old, get a replacement price too. That's a rule of thumb, not an industry standard.

How much does it cost to fix a fairly new garage door?

If the door is only a few years old, ask the installer or manufacturer about warranty coverage before paying for a repair. Otherwise, the same ranges apply: HomeAdvisor puts pulling or filling a dent at about $100 to $300, and Homewyse puts a replacement panel at about $440 to $725. Matching an exact panel is easier on a newer door, while the model is still made.

Does homeowners insurance cover a damaged garage door?

It depends on the cause and your policy. Sudden damage from a storm or a car hitting the door may be covered after the deductible. A part that wore out with age is a different matter, so ask your agent before you file.

Two Texas-specific points:

  • Percentage deductibles. The Texas Department of Insurance explains that a 5 percent deductible on a home with $150,000 of coverage is $7,500, so a repair smaller than that gets no payment from the policy.
  • Separate wind coverage in Jefferson County. TDI says homeowners in the 14 coastal counties may not be able to get private insurance that covers windstorm and hail, and can buy it from the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association. Wind damage to your door may go through that policy, with its own rules. Ask your agent whether a replacement door needs a windstorm inspection.

Cheap garage door repair: what to watch for

TDI's garage door handout lists contractors to be wary of, including anyone who:

  • offers "specials" or "extra-cheap work"
  • only accepts cash
  • requires payment before materials are on site
  • isn't established, or has only out-of-state references
  • goes door to door after a storm

A very low advertised price that grows once the technician is in your garage is the other pattern to watch. Ask for the total, in writing, before work starts. On a new door or several panels, get more than one written quote; TDI suggests at least three.

Why spring and cable work costs what it does

Spring and cable jobs carry real risk. DASMA's homeowner safety tips say spring systems "should be repaired only by trained professionals" and that cables should be replaced only by a trained technician. Part of the price is the training, tools and stocked truck that let a company match springs to your door and finish in one visit. DASMA also says to replace both springs on a two-spring door, which doubles the parts but saves a second trip.

How to get an accurate quote

Tell the company:

  • The door's width and height (16 by 7 feet is a common double door)
  • One or two torsion springs above the door, or extension springs along the tracks
  • Steel, insulated steel, wood or another material, and whether it has glass
  • The opener brand and rough age
  • What happened: a bang, a crooked door, wind damage, flooding, an opener that hums
  • Whether you're in Jefferson County and might need a wind-rated replacement

The final price is set once the technician sees the door. More answers are in the garage door FAQ.
