Referral website, not the contractor. How it works
An off-track garage door has one or more rollers out of the metal track, and it can fall without warning. Stop using it, keep people clear, and have a technician realign it.
SETX Garage Door is a referral website, not a garage door company. We send your request to one independent local garage door company. You never pay us; companies we refer you to may pay us for referrals. To get an off-track door or broken cable looked at, send a request with the form.
Door stuck open, or a car trapped inside? Don't force it and don't pull the red emergency release cord while the door is open. Leave it where it is, and send a request with the form.
Signs the door is off track or a cable is broken
Raynor Door Company, a Chicago-area installer, lists the early signs of an off-track door:
- The door hangs crooked, or one side sits higher than the other.
- A roller is outside the track, or there's a gap between roller and rail.
- The door jams partway and won't move smoothly.
- Grinding, scraping or a loud pop when the door runs.
- The door rubs or leans against the frame on one side.
A broken or slipped lift cable usually shows up as a cable hanging loose beside the door, a door that lifts unevenly, or a bottom corner that drops when the door opens. DASMA's homeowner tips say to look at the cables on both sides; frayed or worn cables "are in danger of breaking."
Why doors come off track around Beaumont and Port Arthur
Raynor names six common causes: a vehicle bumping the door, a broken cable, worn or broken rollers, loose track brackets, something stuck in the track, and tracks that drift out of line over thousands of cycles. On the Gulf Coast, a few of those get extra help.
Rust on cables, rollers and bottom brackets. The American Galvanizers Association says high humidity plus airborne salt from nearby water makes marine air almost as corrosive as industrial air. Steel lift cables fray, roller bearings seize and bottom brackets rust. Raynor notes that a roller that cracks or seizes "can jump the rail."
Wind. The Texas Department of Insurance says garage doors are "particularly vulnerable to high winds" because of the long span they cover and their relatively light material. A strong gust can bow a closed door inward or push an open door sideways, pulling rollers out of the track and kinking the track itself. If a storm bent your door, see wind-rated garage doors before replacing it.
Floodwater. After a flood, the bottom section, bottom brackets, cable ends and the lowest few feet of track are the parts that sat in water. Have them checked for rust and debris even if the door still runs.
Cars and trailers. Tight driveways, boats and trailers make bumping the door easy, and even a low-speed bump can knock a roller loose and bend the track, according to Raynor.
Why you shouldn't force it back
Raynor says an off-track door "weighs 150 to 250 pounds and can fall without warning," and that when rollers leave the track, the springs no longer carry the door's weight evenly. Prying rollers back in can bend the track, crack more rollers, snap a cable or drop the door on your hands or feet.
Cables are part of the spring system. DASMA's tips say that because of the high spring tension, cables "should be replaced only by a trained technician," and that the bottom brackets the cables attach to are under extreme tension. DASMA's inspection checklist (TDS 167) says not to remove, repair or adjust cables, brackets or other door parts yourself.
The one safe step, per Raynor: if the door is fully closed, disconnect the opener with the red release cord so nobody runs it. Then keep everyone clear.
How a technician usually fixes it
- Secures the door so it can't drop while the work is done, and releases spring tension if cables are involved.
- Inspects the track, rollers, cables, drums and brackets to find what caused the problem.
- Straightens or replaces bent track and re-fastens loose brackets.
- Replaces worn or rusted rollers and frayed cables. Ask whether nylon rollers with sealed bearings are worth it near the water.
- Rehangs and balances the door, then checks the opener's force and safety-reverse settings.
Raynor says a straightforward realignment often takes about an hour. A bent track, a broken cable or a damaged section adds time.
What off-track and cable repair costs
National figures checked in October 2026:
| Job | Typical range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Lift cable repair | About $100 to $400 | HomeAdvisor |
| Track repair | About $5 for a bracket up to $400 for a full track | HomeAdvisor |
| Most garage door repairs | About $155 to $379; about $265 average | HomeAdvisor |
| Garage door repair, all types | About $235 to $695; most pay around $403 | Thumbtack |
Thumbtack also gives one example of a Texas pro charging $130 to reset an off-track door; that's a single listing, not a typical price. If a spring broke too, add the spring cost from the garage door spring repair page. Your price comes from the company. The garage door repair cost guide has every part in one table.
When the track damage means a new door
Ask for a replacement price as well when:
- Several sections are bent or creased, not just the track.
- The bottom section or brackets have rusted through.
- The door keeps coming off track after repairs.
- The door was bowed by wind and you're in Jefferson County, where a replacement may need to meet windstorm rules. Ask your insurance agent or TDI (800-248-6032) first.
DASMA also warns against putting a new door on the old track, because "the track and sections work together as a system." See garage door installation.
Keeping rollers and cables in the track
- Look along both tracks every few months for dents, loose bolts and rust.
- Keep the track channels clear. Raynor lists stones, debris and hardened grease among the things that push rollers off course.
- For squeaky springs, DASMA suggests a spray-on lubricant made for garage doors before calling a technician.
- Look at both cables near the bottom brackets for fraying or rust. If you see any, call; don't touch.
- After a hurricane or flood, run the door once while you watch it. Stop if it binds, leans or makes new noises.

Common questions
Why won't my garage door close all the way?
The most common reasons are blocked or misaligned safety sensors, an obstruction in the track, a roller that has jumped the track, or a door that's out of balance from a weak spring or a stretched cable. If the door is crooked or a roller is outside the track, stop using it.
Can I push the rollers back into the track myself?
No. Raynor Door Company, a Chicago-area garage door installer, says an off-track door weighs 150 to 250 pounds and can fall without warning, and that levering rollers back in can bend the track, snap a cable or drop the door. Leave the door where it is.
What is the most common garage door repair?
HomeAdvisor calls broken springs one of the most common, and most dangerous, garage door problems. Opener and sensor problems, worn rollers and cables, and off-track doors round out most service calls.
How long does it take to fix an off-track door?
Raynor Door Company says a straightforward realignment often takes about an hour. Bent track sections, broken cables or damaged panels take longer and cost more.
